2007
Scholarship Winners
Alyssa Sage, a senior at Valentine Rural High School, is this year's
winner of the annual $500 Supertubes Scholarships. Ms. Sage will enter
the University of Lincoln at Kearney this fall, and, because of her interest
in and exposure to the field of speech pathology at an early age, she will
seek a degree in speech pathology. Ms. Sage will be living in a dormitory and
plans to work part time while attending college.
The Scholarship Committee states here excellent work ethic
and honor roll grades secured Ms.
Sage the scholarship.
Ms.
Sage has been active in cross-country, track, drama,
marching band, pep band, swing choir, choir, speech, concert
band, jazz band, and has been in the Southwest Conference
Honor Band three years. She has also been a member of the
drama and speech teams. She has been a class officer, student
council representative and National Honor Society Vice-President.
Ms. Sage, who grew up on a ranch, has also been involved
in FFA for four years, and served as an officer of that
organization for three years. Ms. SAge has been a Mat Maid
Tournament Director, has gone to the State Science Fair,
has been a Rotary Student of the Month, belongs to the Sparks
Livewires 4-H Club and has been a Cherry County Junior Leader.
Ms
Sage is the daughter of Troy & Michelle Sage of Sparks,
Nebraska.
2006 Scholarship
Winners

Kelly Schubauer, a senior at Valentine Rural High School, is
this year's winner of the annual $500 Supertubes Scholarships. Ms. Schubauer
will enter Lincoln Southeast Community College in July and in two years, will
transfer to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln to pursue a degree in business,
and is also planning on studying dance and fashion. She will be living in an
apartment and is planning on getting a job to help with college expenses.
The Scholarship Committee states that the high grades, excellent study ethic
and an academic ranking in her class of 10th out of 64 students secured Ms.
Schubauer the scholarship.
Ms.
Schubauer is a member of National Honor Society, and Student Government,
serving as treasurer for each, and is also a member of FCA,
INTERACT and Mat Maids, and volunteers at the Head Start
and for the 4-6 Club in her spare time.
Ms
Schubauer has been on the high honor roll every semester and
has already taken 11 hours of dual credit classes, including
calculus.
She
works at Corner Markets and has worked at the Valentine Vision
Center and the Donut Shop in the past. Ms Schubauer is the
daughter of Mark and Betty Schubauer of Valentine.

Jamie Hockenbary, a senior at Valentine Rural High School,
is one of the this year's winners of the annual $500 Supertubes
Scholarships. Ms. Hockenbary will enter the University of Lincoln
at Kearney this fall and because of her interest and personal experience
in the field of chiropractic, will be studying to be a chiropractor.
She will be living in a dormitory and will be working part time
during
her college career.
The Scholarship Committee states that the high grades, excellent
study ethic and the challenges Ms. Hockenbary gave herself by choosing
a particularly difficult course load during high school secured
her
scholarship. Ms Hockenbary is ranked 6th in her class of 59 seniors.
Ms. Hockenbary is a member of National Honor Society, INTERACT
and is listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students.
During
high school Ms. Hockenbary was American Legion Essay Contest Winner,
AWANA leader, Scholastic contest competition, teacher's aide, mat
maid and wrestling student manager. She was also involved in Art,
Choir, Basketball, Track, the Homecoming window and float committee,
Reading Recovery, My town, Softball Stats for boys and girls. She
won judges choice Poppy drawing as well.
An avid golfer, Ms Hockenbary has been in an individual golf medallist,
named Rangeland Conference in golf and been on the State Golf Team.
Ms. Hockenbary will be working in the hayfield this summer, as she
has for the past two summers. She will also be in a shadowing program
with a chiropractor which will give Ms. Hockenbary hands on experience
in the field of chiropractic before she goes to college.
Ms Hockenbary is the daughter of John and Julie Hockenbary of Valentine.

Amber
Maire, a senior at Valentine Rural High School,
is one of the this year's winners of the annual $500 Supertubes
Scholarships. Ms. Maire will enter the University of Lincoln at
Kearney and is planning on studying criminal justice. She will
be
living in a dormitory and is planning on working part time in a
large department store during her college career.
The Scholarship Committee states that Ms. Maire's excellent work
ethic, solid grades and an ongoing presence on the honor roll secured
Ms. Maire a scholarship.
During high school, Ms. Maire has been involved with Art, Band,
Track, Volleyball, Basketball, being a student manager and My Town
Clean Up. During the summer, Ms Maire plays softball on the Valentine
Women's Softball League.
Ms. Maire, a hard worker, has worked since she was 14 years old.
She is working at Henderson's IGA this summer before going off to
college.
Ms. Maire is the daughter of Craig Maire of Valentine.

Jessica
Battershaw, a senior at Valentine Rural High School, is this
year's winner of the $500 Supertubes Scholarship. Ms. Battershaw
will enter the University of Nebraska at Lincoln this fall and
because
of her interest and experience in the field of finance and business
is planning on a major in business administration. She will be
living
in a campus dormitory and is planning on working at a job through
a work-study program.
The
scholarship committee states that the high grades, excellent study
ethic and a ranking in her class of 6th place out of 64 students
secured Ms. Battershaw the scholarship.
Ms.
Battershaw is a member of National Honor Society, Future Business
Leaders of America and Interact-Rotary Youth Organization. During
high school Ms. Battershaw attended Mid-Plains Scholastic Contest
& Chadron Scholastic Contest in multiple classes. Also during
high school Ms. Battershaw was on the high honor roll every semester.
An
accomplished musician, Ms. Battershaw plays trombone, flute
and
piano, the latter of which she also teaches. She has been involved
in band, jazz band, concert, pep and marching band and has
attended
Chadron Festival Band (2 years), Rangeland Conference Band (4 years)
and District Music Contest (4 years).
Ms.
Battershaw is working at the Rosebud Casino and Hot Stuff Pizza
this summer.
Ms.
Battershaw is the daughter of Jim & Jeannie Battershaw of Valentine.

Ryan
Markus, a senior at Valentine Rural High School, is this year's
winner of the $500 Supertubes Scholarship. Mr. Markus will enter
the University of Nebraska at Lincoln this fall and is planning
on studying Business Management or Computer Science. He is planning
on living in the on-campus dormitories and states he will be working
his way through college.
Mr.
Markus currently works for Hometown Lumber, Henderson's IGA and
the Jewell II Move Theater.
The
Scholarship Committee states that the high grades, excellent work
ethic and impressive ACT and PSAT scores exhibited by Mr. Markus
secured the scholarship for him.
Mr.
Markus is a member of the National Honor Society, Jaycee Teens and
INTERACT in the community. He is the son of Diedre and Rusty Markus
of Valentine.
